The earliest record of a pipe band in Brechin is the formation in 1884 to lead the local volunteer detachment. This band also took part in various local ceremonies related to the funeral of Queen Victoria and welcome home local men who served in the Boer war. Brechin Town Council drew up a constitution in October 1950 officially naming the band The City of Brechin Pipe Band.

The band wore the Royal Stewart tartan up until 2007 when their own tartan was designed by band member Paul McAndrew and worn for the first time at the World Pipe Band Championships.

The current Pipe Major, Craig Black, took charge of the band in October 1997 leading the band into competition in 1998 and successfully winning the World and European Championships and the overall champion of champions at grade 4B level gaining promotion to 4A. Over the next 8 years the band were relatively successful collecting various prizes most notably 4th in the Europeans in Belgium in 2003 and then 3rd and 4th at the European and British Championships respectively in 2006 gaining promotion to grade 3B. After securing 4th places at the British, European and Cowal Championships and a 5th place at the Scottish Championship in 2007 the band was again promoted to its current standing in Grade 3A.
